TSA Approved Snacks

When Nic and I travel whether it’s on a road trip or flying we prep snacks for the trip. One because we would rather spend our money on things at our destination and not on overpriced snacks. Two, it’s always nice to have comfort food from home. Three during these times there are limited options for open restaurants in the airport. The few restaurants that are open usually have a longer wait time to hold to the mandated regulations on capacity and spacing.

A Couple Notes

Food must be separated in your personal or carry on bag as to make it less of a clump and more of individual items (this way you are less likely to be stopped for this particular reason)

“Final Decision Rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through checkpoint” this is a quote from the TSA Website. So pretty much don’t argue with the TSA agent if they take something away from you and do your research beforehand.

You can find the list of acceptable food items and more on the TSA website here or by downloading the Free MyTSA App on your apple or android and going to the “Can I Bring?” tab on the bottom.

So lets get to it!

What can you bring food wise with you on your flight?

Bread

This kind of goes along with sandwiches, which you will find later on in the list. Its a solid that will not suddenly turn liquid on you. It is also filling which will keep you from want to buy snackies on the plane or in the airport.

Cereal

I used to bring ziploc bags of cereal to school to tithe my hunger later in the mornings. It’s also very travel friendly and is good when your craving something sweet and small.

Chocolate (liquid if less than 3.4 oz)

This is for those who have the sweet tooth, or perhaps if you are a Harry Potter fan a small piece of chocolate is also good for you after a dementor attack.

Cheese

Must be in its solid form and be nice to your neighbors and don’t bring the stinkiest cheese on the plane with you. But I always go for a couple of slices of smoked gouda.

 Cookies

Cookies like crackers may crumble in your bag so keep that in mind. But who wouldn’t enjoy a little sweet treat or a homemade good to bring with you on your journey to your destination.

Crackers

Crackers and cheese what could be a better snack? Prep these in Tupperware and you won’t have to worry about crushed crackers.

 Dried fruit

If you would like to take the time to dry your, own fruit there are plenty of recipes on Pinterest which I have saved to my board here. Otherwise you can spend the money to buy various kinds of dried fruits.

 Fresh Fruits & Veggies*

Eating healthier is one, good for you and two usually tastes the best, especially when you’re sitting on a plane for hours on end and you don’t want the processed sugar to build up.

*There are special instructions for this item. To find out more click here.

 Gum

Not only is it good for keeping your breath fresh but it can also aid in the change of pressure on your ears. The reason behind chewing gum during take off and landing is….

Jams & Jellies (less than 3.4 oz/100 ml allowed)

You know in the grand chance that you pack a loaf of bread, jelly and peanut butter and decide you want to make a light snack on the plane. I put this one on here because one, I thought it was funny and two, maybe the location that you are traveling to doesn’t have this comfort food. Or you’re especially picky and only like the one kind. Whatever it is you do you and be happy!

Nuts

With all of the allergies I’d be careful about this one because you never know what your neighbor is allergic to. Again, this is your decision and if you make homemade trail mix and you want to eat it, may be be courteous to your neighbor and ask if they’re allergic. If not, have at it. If so, it can wait until you arrive at your next airport or destination.

Peanut Butter (less than 3.4oz/100 ml)

This is one of Nic’s favorite snacks. A spoonful of peanut butter is packed with Protein and can fill you up. It’s good for you, tastes good and fun fact, can aid in stopping your hiccups.

 Protein or Energy POWDERS

The emphasis on POWDERS. You can bring 12 oz/ 350 ML of these powders. However, they must be placed in a separate security bin for x ray screening. So for those of you that enjoy your shakes; you can still have them just follow TSA regulation.

Sandwiches

Something healthy and filling, you can ask for condiments at the restaurants on the other side if security. So build whatever kind of sandwich yok would like, just remember to put it in a clear container or plastic bag.

Trail Mix

A good mix of dried fruits, chocolate and nuts into a protein filled snack. Nic and I usually buy in bulk and make, our own trail mixes, that way when we feel like changing it up or having two different kinds of mix we can do that. It also is cheaper per bag. Here are some ideas on how to make your own trail mix.

 Yogurt (less than 3.4 oz/ 100 ml)

This one van be kind of iffy because some yogurts are so thin that they could be considered a “liquid”. I’ve never tried to bring yogurt with me. However it says on the TSA website that yogurt is allowed as long as it is less that 3.4 oz/ 100ml

So what snacks will you bring?
